Apparently Bow Wow wants a new "leash" on life... starting with another record label.
Sources report that the rapper wants to part ways with Columbia Records. Bow Wow confirmed the rumors on his Twitter page, "Yep! It's true! I want off Columbia. I'm asking to be released. NO they not dropping me I'm askn. Not happy there. Been like dis 4 5yrs."
Bow Wow, born Shad Moss, blames the demise of the partnership on the label's minimal experience in working with Hip-Hop artists.
"I think Columbia's problem is that they don't know how to work with rappers," Bow Wow says. "I'm really the only rapper on that label. My labelmates consist of John Legend who they work extremely well with, Beyonce Knowles who they work extremely well with, but when it comes to rappers they're not really a rap label, they don't get it."
The rapper/actor also attributes the growing wedge between him and Columbia Records to the label's lack of knowledge on how to appeal to the younger market. "They're not young, and I'm a young guy but they're not young, so they don't really understand what the young people want. They got Three 6 Mafia, but when is the last time that Three 6 Mafia have put out a successful album? You can't really blame the artists because the label is the energy."
Bow Wow has even started his own Twitter campaign a la Diddy's Follow Me movement. The young star has asked all his dedicated fans, via a Twitter post, to join his Free Bow Wow from Columbia Records campaign.
To date, the self-proclaimed Hip-Hop Prince has received hundreds of responses in support of his decision to abandon his longtime label.
Bow Wow has already set his sights on signing with Atlantic Records.
